Voter Registration for Local Elections Launched in Galmudug, South West States as part of the upcoming One Person, One Vote elections

The leaders of the Galmudug and South West State administrations, President Abdikadir Hassan Mohamed Laftagaren and President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qorqor have officially launched a voter registration campaign for local elections in the towns of Baydhabo and Dhuusamareeb.

Members of the National Independent Electoral Commission and other stakeholders participated in the launch event, emphasizing the importance of voter registration in the democratic process. The campaign is said to aim to prepare citizens for upcoming local elections, ensuring their voices are heard in governance.

The presidents urged the public to register in order to have a say in choosing their local leaders, which they believe will enhance accountability and development in their regions. The initiative is said yo reflect a broader commitment to democratic participation and local governance.

The one-person, one-vote election system is expected to be implemented nationwide, starting with local councils. The leaders indicated that this marks a significant step toward strengthening democracy in Somalia after years of conflict and instability.

Meanwhile, Banadir Region has already commenced voter registration for local council elections, with Hirshabelle and SSC-Khatumo expected to follow suit soon. However, the situation remains uncertain in Puntland and Jubbaland, where the feasibility of this electoral process is still under discussion.
