The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that Mohamed Mire Jama, a senior Al-Shabaab leader, was killed in an airstrike conducted on December 24, 2024. The operation occurred approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Kunyo Barrow in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia.
AFRICOM released a statement describing the strike as part of ongoing efforts to support Somali forces in their fight against the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group. Mohamed Mire Jama, also known as Abu Abdrahman, was a high-ranking member of Al-Shabaab’s executive committee, with 15 years of involvement in the group.
According to various statements, Mohamed Mire Jama was a significant figure within Al-Shabaab, responsible for extortion, militia mobilization, and sustaining the group’s operations.
The Somali government also confirmed the strike, emphasizing its collaboration with international security partners in counter-terrorism operations. The Ministry of Information highlighted Jama’s role as an “illegal extortion collector and militia mobilizer” and reiterated the government’s commitment to dismantling Al-Shabaab’s network.
This development follows a series of targeted operations aimed at crippling Al-Shabaab’s command structure. The joint efforts between Somali forces and international partners have intensified as the country seeks to eradicate the militant group and enhance national security.
