Mogadishu, Somalia – 25th November 2023.
The United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM) sent congratulations to the government and people of Somalia for the remarkable achievement of officially joining the East African Community (EAC). In a press release, UNSOM described this accomplishment as a significant victory for Somalia, symbolizing its return to the international community and the restoration of its dignity.
The announcement of Somalia’s membership in the EAC was made during a meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, the organization’s headquarters. President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the diligent efforts undertaken since 2016 to secure this position, highlighting the substantial opportunities it brings for the Somali people in terms of international markets, business ventures, and facilitated travel.
President Hassan Sheikh expressed, “It is an opportunity for the Somali people to find an international market, business opportunities, and easy travel.” The EAC membership positions Somalia strategically within a regional economic framework, fostering increased cooperation and economic integration.
Somalia now stands as the 8th member of the East African Community, joining the ranks of Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania. This milestone, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said is not only a testament to Somalia’s commitment to regional collaboration but also opens avenues for economic growth, trade, and enhanced diplomatic relations within the East African region.
