Several Somali traditional elders have accused Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen of obstructing efforts to de-escalate the political crisis in South West State, including declining to authorize a reconciliation conference in Baidoa.
Speaking in Mogadishu on Friday evening, the elders alleged that the regional president also refused to delegate authority to the state parliament speaker and proceeded to establish a disputed committee amid ongoing disagreements over the region’s electoral model.
Prominent traditional leader Sultan Warsame Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Ali Yabarow called for restraint from all sides, urging dialogue and a negotiated political settlement. The elders appealed to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to intervene and help prevent further escalation.
The accusations come as tensions between the federal government and the South West administration intensify, with growing concerns that the political deadlock could trigger instability if not resolved through consensus-based processes.
