Journalist Shafi’i Abdi Mohamed, widely known as Shaaciye, has been released after spending a week in detention in Hargeisa. His arrest on January 16, 2025, sparked widespread concern over press freedom in Somaliland and drew attention to the challenges faced by journalists holding power to account in the region.
Shaaciye, a seasoned journalist with a reputation for bold critiques of authority, found himself detained upon his return to Hargeisa after a year in Mogadishu. His Facebook posts, often critical of Somaliland’s authorities and police, appeared to have drawn the ire of those in power. His arrest was carried out without formal charges or explanation, leaving many questioning the motive behind the detention.
During his time in Mogadishu, Shaaciye continued his investigative reporting and social media critiques, exposing corruption and abuses within Somaliland’s security agencies. Despite threats from intelligence operatives, he remained undeterred, using his platform to amplify public grievances and demand accountability.
The arrest, carried out by police under the command of Mohamed Adan Saqadhi, occurred without prior notice or clear charges. Observers described it as a troubling example of efforts to suppress critical voices in the region.
