Somalia’s Parliament Speaker demands answers over South West State territorial losses

Somalia’s Speaker of the House of the People, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, has urged the Federal Government to hold Ethiopian troops accountable over the seizure of towns in South West State by forces loyal to former regional president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

Jama made the remarks during a meeting with members of parliament, ministers and other officials from South West State to discuss the region’s deteriorating security and political situation.

He criticised what he described as an unprecedented development in Somali politics, accusing a politician of seeking support from Al-Shabaab. He warned that such actions could have serious consequences.

The Speaker called on the Federal Government to seek explanations from Ethiopian troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), questioning how Al-Shabaab could capture areas where Ethiopian forces were deployed.

Jama also demanded an explanation from the government over the alleged presence in Kenya of a politician he described as being on a blacklist, claiming that the individual was staying in known locations without any action being taken against him.

The loss of towns and territories previously controlled by the administration led by Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe has sparked widespread debate over security and political stability in South West State.

The developments have intensified pressure on the Federal Government to address the deteriorating situation and clarify the role of security forces deployed in the affected areas.
