Somalia says 75 Al-Shabaab fighters killed in Bay Operation

The Somali government has said that around 75 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed and 56 others wounded during a tough military operation in Jameeca, an area under Buurhakaba district in the Bay region.

In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Defence said the operation took place on October 26 and lasted several hours. The operations reportedly targeted multiple locations around Buurhakaba where Al-Shabaab had established bases.

The ministry said Al-Shabaab fighters used vehicles loaded with explosives to attack government military vehicles during the fighting, damaging some of the army’s vehicles.

According to the statement, the operation was part of the government’s ongoing operations which targets Al-Shabaab positions as part of efforts to weaken the group’s operational capabilities.

The Ministry of Defence and the Somali National Army Command said they would continue military operations against Al-Shabaab, aiming to reduce the group’s strength and prevent it from reorganising.
The ministry did not disclose any casualties among government forces.

Al-Shabaab also claimed that it had killed more than 200 Somali government soldiers after attacking a military convoy.

The group also released images and videos of military vehicles it claimed to have destroyed during the attack. However, there has been no independent confirmation of Al-Shabaab’s claims.

Somalia’s continued military operations have reportedly weakened Al-Shabaab, with sustained pressure on the group contributing to the surrender of several fighters to the Federal Government.

The government has continued to encourage militants to abandon the group and reintegrate into society, while maintaining military operations against those who remain active.
