Somalia has resumed its National Conference on Community Solidarity and Mutual Assistance, with discussions focusing on emergency preparedness and measures to mitigate the potential effects of El Niño.
The conference is jointly organised by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and World Vision Somalia, bringing together stakeholders to strengthen community-led emergency response and improve cooperation in disaster preparedness.
The gathering aims “to promote coordinated action among government institutions, businesses, private-sector organisations and the wider public to help communities prepare for anticipated emergencies” .
Organisers are emphasising the importance of community solidarity and mutual assistance in ensuring timely responses when disasters occur.
The conference also provides a platform for stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen local preparedness, improve coordination and reduce the potential impact of emergencies on vulnerable communities.
Somalia regularly faces climate-related hazards, including droughts and floods, which can disrupt livelihoods, displace families and place additional pressure on humanitarian services.
The organisers say stronger community participation and cooperation among institutions are essential to improving disaster resilience and ensuring more effective responses to future emergencies.
