Somalia: Puntland Issues Strict Regulations Targeting Illegal Foreign Nationals

The Ministry of Interior in Puntland State has released a statement announcing strict measures against foreign nationals residing or entering the region without proper documentation.

The announcement comes amid intensified efforts to combat ISIS-linked groups in the area, which reportedly include many foreign fighters.

According to the new regulations, any foreign national staying illegally in Puntland will no longer be allowed to rent houses or secure employment.

The ministry has also banned begging in public spaces, particularly with numbered cards often used to solicit funds in mosques, streets, and near businesses.

Additionally, telecommunications companies have been instructed not to provide SIM cards or services to undocumented foreigners.

Companies were also instructed to immediately suspend accounts and numbers currently being used for begging purposes.

The directive also prohibits unregistered small-scale businesses often set up along roadsides or within neighborhoods.

The Ministry of Interior emphasized that these measures aim to safeguard public safety and protect residents’ lives and property.

These steps come as Puntland faces growing security challenges, particularly from extremist groups exploiting the region’s vulnerabilities.
