The Puntland regional government has announced its decision not to participate in the ongoing national dialogue taking place in Somalia’s capital,Mogadishu, where leaders from the federal government, regional states, the opposition, and civil society are expected to convene.
The Minister of Justice for Puntland stated that the region will not engage in the dialogue due to unresolved issues, particularly concerning the Constitution and upcoming elections.
He emphasized that as long as these contentious points remain, a platform for meaningful discussion cannot be established.
This statement comes in light of recent comments made by Somalia’s Minister of Justice, who indicated that the dialogue is scheduled to take place on June 15. The confirmation of this date has raised the stakes for all involved parties.
Puntland officials believe that without consensus on critical issues, participation in the dialogue would be futile. They argue that genuine dialogue requires a foundation of mutual agreement and understanding.
As the situation develops, the absence of Puntland from the dialogue could complicate efforts to unify the various factions in Somalia and address pressing national concerns.
