Somalia’s intelligence chief, Mahad Mohamed Salad, has urged communities from Balanballe and Guriceel in Galmudug to uphold a newly signed peace agreement and prevent a return to the conflict that has affected the area for years.
Speaking after the agreement was signed, Salad called on the communities to “preserve the peace and ensure that previous disputes do not reignite tensions or lead to renewed violence” .
The agreement was signed between representatives of the Balanballe and Guriceel communities following reconciliation efforts aimed at resolving longstanding disputes and ending repeated clashes.
The eight-point agreement provides for disputes to be resolved through Islamic law, including provisions on compensation and qisas.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre witnessed the signing of the agreement on Monday as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to support reconciliation and stability in Galmudug.
The government said the agreement could contribute to lasting peace while creating a more favourable environment for economic development and improved access to public services.
The reconciliation process comes after years of tensions and armed confrontations between the communities, with authorities now calling on both sides to respect the agreement and prevent a return to conflict.
