The Somali Federal Government has today enforced a requirement that all passengers travelling on domestic flights must carry a National Identification Card.
The government says the measure is aimed at strengthening national security and improving the monitoring of citizens’ movements across the country.
According to informed sources, the new requirement has affected flights between Mogadishu and Garowe, with some scheduled flights reportedly cancelled today.
The move comes amid an ongoing dispute between the Federal Government and Puntland over the implementation of national identification services.
Puntland has previously opposed the establishment of National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) offices in areas under its administration, creating challenges for residents seeking national identification services.
The Federal Government had earlier introduced a similar requirement for passengers travelling on international flights, requiring them to present a National Identification Card.
