The Somali government has called on Arab countries to strengthen media cooperation and exchange expertise in combating extremist ideology and misinformation spread by terrorist groups.
Somali Minister of Information, Abdifatah Qasim Mahmoud, made the remarks during his speech at the 56th Session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers held in Cairo, Egypt, where Somalia assumed the council’s chairmanship.
The minister said Somalia’s experience in fighting terrorism highlights the need for professional media messaging to educate the public about how armed groups use misinformation and recruitment tactics to attract new members.
He emphasized the importance of media platforms highlighting the voices of religious scholars, victims and communities affected by armed groups, while avoiding the dissemination of propaganda and messages used by terrorist organizations to strengthen their influence.
Abdifatah Qasim also called for greater opportunities and hope for young people, saying their meaningful participation in society would help strengthen public trust and reduce the vulnerability of communities to extremist groups seeking to exploit social and economic challenges.
