Somalia and United Nations Strategize Withdrawal of ATMIS Troops in Security Transition Talks

Somalia’s government and the United Nations have engaged in discussions regarding the second phase of reducing ATMIS forces.

The Somali Defense Force Commander, Gen. Ibrahim Sheikh Muhyiddin, met with UN officials to focus on the security transition, particularly the withdrawal of ATMIS forces.

The UN’s support office in Somalia, led by Akayira, affirmed its commitment to provide logistical assistance to Somalia’s armed forces.

Both parties also explored ways to better coordinate the implementation of UN Resolution No. 2687(2023), which mandates ATMIS troops’ withdrawal.

This meeting coincides with Somalia’s efforts to liberate Galmudug and Hirshabeelle areas from Al-Shabaab, with the President overseeing the commencement of second phase of in Dhusomareb.
The Somali government seeks international support, especially from the UN, to aid in liberating areas controlled by Al-Shabaab.
