Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Omar MP, met with Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktas, on Tuesday at the Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu. The high-level discussions focused on deepening bilateral relations and areas of cooperation, particularly in the context of Somalia’s recent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
In a statement released by the Turkish Embassy, the meeting underscored Turkey’s commitment to supporting Somalia during its two-year tenure on the UNSC for 2025-2026. Both sides explored avenues for collaboration to advance regional and international peace and security initiatives.
“During our meeting, we discussed areas of cooperation in the context of Somalia’s non-permanent membership to the UN Security Council,” the statement read.
Somalia’s UNSC membership marks a significant milestone for the country, providing an opportunity to contribute to global decision-making on peace and security matters. The partnership between Somalia and Turkey is expected to further enhance Somalia’s ability to navigate complex international issues during its tenure.
