Somali Police Crack Down on Unregistered Vehicles in Mogadishu, Enforce New License Plate Rule

The Somali police have implemented a regulation banning the operation of vehicles without official license plates in the capital city, Mogadishu. This directive, which aims to enhance vehicle identification and compliance with traffic regulations, has led to the arrest of several drivers and owners of unregistered vehicles.

According to the police statement, all vehicles lacking official license plates must now be equipped with the appropriate identification tags and fulfill necessary legal requirements, including payment of taxes to the Ministry of Transport. The enforcement of this rule follows previous warnings issued by the Somali Police Command regarding the prohibition of driving unregistered vehicles in the city.

Despite these warnings, many luxury vehicles have been seen operating without license plates in Mogadishu, some of which are reportedly being driven by individuals in military uniforms. The presence of these unregistered vehicles, often associated with armed personnel, has raised concerns about security and regulatory compliance.

The new enforcement measure aims to address these issues by ensuring that all vehicles on Mogadishu’s roads are properly registered and identifiable. The police have urged vehicle owners to comply with the regulations promptly to avoid legal repercussions and contribute to improved traffic management and security in the capital.
