Somali National University (SNU) has officially launched the Somali National Artificial Intelligence Centre (SNAIC), a new Centre of Excellence aimed at advancing artificial intelligence research, education, innovation and capacity building across Somalia.
The centre was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by representatives from government institutions, universities, research organizations, academia, technology experts and other key stakeholders.
According to the university, the Somali National Artificial Intelligence Centre will serve as “SNU’s focal point for AI research and innovation, supporting the development of locally driven technological solutions to accelerate national development and digital transformation” .
SNAIC will focus on promoting artificial intelligence research, developing national talent, supporting innovation, informing AI policy and governance, and strengthening partnerships that encourage the responsible use of AI technologies.
The centre’s research agenda will include machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, robotics and AI ethics, with practical applications in education, healthcare, agriculture, governance and economic development.
In addition to research, the centre will offer “academic programmes, professional training, research initiatives and innovation activities designed to equip students, researchers and professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to harness artificial intelligence for Somalia’s development” .
University officials described the launch as a significant milestone in Somalia’s efforts to build a knowledge-based economy and prepare a new generation of professionals capable of driving innovation and digital transformation through emerging technologies.
