Mogadishu, Somalia – May 19, 2024; In the coming month of June, the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) will begin a significant reduction of its troops as part of the planned drawdown approved by the United Nations Security Council. This move marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to transition security responsibilities to Somali forces.
The temporary operation of ATMIS has already seen its forces withdraw from several areas under the Hir-Shabelle and Jubbaland State Governments. In their place, the Federal Government troops and Dervish forces of these states have taken over the security responsibilities.
Federal Army officers have been actively inspecting various military camps and special command units to ensure that Somali forces are well-prepared to assume control of the positions vacated by ATMIS. This transition is a key part of the broader strategy to enhance the capabilities and readiness of the Somali National Army (SNA) and regional forces.
Various sources have confirmed to Mustaqbal that the reduction of African Union forces in Somalia is proceeding as planned, with ongoing discussions between Somali and African officials to manage the upcoming steps. The complete withdrawal of ATMIS troops is set for the end of 2024, which will mark the conclusion of their mission that began in 2007.
