31 August 2014: AMISOM soldiers swept through Kurtunwaarey town after it was captured from Al-Shabaab.
The Somali government security agencies in collaboration with Djiboutian and Ethiopian troops serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have launched a security operation in Beledweyne, the regional capital of Hiran region yesterday evening.
The security operation to ensure the security of the town lasted for hours.
The joint operation was carried out in over 10 areas under the control of Beledweyne town in the east and west of Beledweyne district including Bardhere, Hujuub, Ell Baar, Faafgumare and other areas.
The heads of the Somali National Army and AMISOM forces who spoke to the media after the operation said that the purpose of their operation was to strengthen the security of Beledweyne district which is expected to hold elections soon for the 25 seats in the 11th Parliament of Somalia.
The lower house elections has kicked off amid vote rigging cintrsversy claims by opposition candidates.
