On Sunday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey held a productive phone call, reinforcing their nations’ strong bilateral relationship and discussing key regional issues.
The conversation focused on enhancing the partnership between Somalia and Turkey, with particular emphasis on defense cooperation and economic development. Both leaders underscored the importance of their alliance in promoting regional security and stability.
President Mohamud acknowledged Turkey’s crucial role in facilitating dialogue and seeking peaceful resolutions to regional challenges. He reiterated Somalia’s “readiness to engage in economic and development cooperation with Ethiopia” but emphasized that any such partnerships must uphold “Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and comply with international law and norms.”
President Mohamud also expressed gratitude to President Erdoğan for Turkey’s ongoing mediation efforts in the Somalia-Ethiopia dispute, particularly concerning the issue of Ethiopian access to the sea. This mediation is part of Turkey’s broader efforts to address regional tensions and foster peaceful resolutions.
