Reports have emerged of renewed inter-clan clashes in the Gedo region, with intense fighting breaking out in the Luuq district. The violence has led to multiple casualties, injuries, and the destruction of a key market, further destabilizing the area.
According to local sources, the conflict began yesterday over issues related to land ownership. The situation escalated quickly when two soldiers, part of the local forces, had a heated argument. The confrontation turned violent, resulting in the immediate death of one soldier, which ignited the broader conflict between the communities.
Renowned traditional elder Ugas Abdirashid Ugas Bilow confirmed the severity of the clashes. “At least five people were killed in the intense fighting, one of them a woman, and three others were injured,” he reported. Additionally, a crucial commercial hub in Luuq district, which played a significant role in the Gedo region’s economy, was burnt down amid the violence.
Ugas Abdirashid provided further details, stating, “It happened when there was a fire in a camp which was home to displaced families. Five people died and three others were injured.”
The elder, known for his role as a peace ambassador, called for an immediate ceasefire. “We, the elders, are calling for the unconditional end to the war and the suffering in Luuq district,” he urged. His plea highlights the desperation for peace and stability in the region, where inter-clan conflicts have become increasingly frequent.
The rising number of ethnic conflicts in Somalia has generated widespread fear among the population. The government continues to advocate for peaceful dialogue, urging the involved communities to resolve their disputes amicably.
The Somali government is closely monitoring the situation in Luuq and is expected to deploy additional resources to mediate and restore peace.
