Puntland President Deni Accuses Federal Government of Pressuring Constitutional Amendments for Project Approval

Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni has openly accused the federal government of Somalia of exerting pressure on Puntland to accept constitutional amendments in exchange for unblocking crucial development projects. Deni addressed the Puntland Parliament in his reelection campaign speech ahead of the 8th January election just hours away , expressing concerns about the alleged economic pressure aimed at influencing political interests.

Deni stated, “We did not negotiate to compromise the federal system. We reject the idea that funds intended for Somalia’s economic development, which includes Puntland, should be tied to constitutional changes that could be misleading.” Deni emphasized the importance of maintaining Puntland’s autonomy in the face of external pressures.

Highlighting the impact on stalled projects, Deni explained, “Puntland’s projects are stuck in the central government due to recent maneuvers. As this government’s term nears its end, we are being pressured to accept changes to the constitution, seemingly wanting to bring government guaranteeing alterations to the constitutional system.”

Deni further asserted that the federal government’s tactics became evident when it realized the impending conclusion of Puntland’s current government mandate. He accused the central government of exploiting this transition period to advance its political agenda, tying project approvals to constitutional amendments.

These allegations were made during Deni’s address to the Puntland parliament, where he, as a presidential candidate, presented his concerns and perspectives on the situation. The accusations signal a growing tension between Puntland and the federal government, raising questions about the delicate balance between regional autonomy and federal authority in Somalia.
