Presidents of Somalia and Egypt Hold Talks to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation.

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday in a high-level meeting aimed at strengthening strategic ties between the two nations. The talks, held in Al-Alamein, Egypt, focused on deepening cooperation in areas of security, diplomacy, regional stability, education, and healthcare.

According to official readouts, both leaders expressed a commitment to fast-tracking the implementation of the bilateral cooperation agreement signed in August 2024, which includes components of military support and regional coordination.

President Hassan Sheikh praised Egypt’s continued support for Somalia, especially in areas such as security sector reform, diplomatic training, educational exchanges, and public health initiatives. He emphasized the importance of regional alliances in enhancing national stability and development.

President al-Sisi, in turn, reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering backing for the Somali government and people, particularly in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab (AS) and efforts to bolster national unity and governance structures.

“Egypt remains a committed partner to Somalia’s peace and progress,” President al-Sisi reportedly told his Somali counterpart, while also applauding Somalia’s recent strides in state-building and counterterrorism.

The growing relationship between Cairo and Mogadishu has gained momentum over the past two years, with Egypt now playing a more visible role in supporting Somalia through training programs and strategic military collaboration.

Notably, Egyptian forces are also expected to be part of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM)—a transition force replacing ATMIS—as Egypt expands its influence in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea corridor.

The leaders’ meeting marks a significant milestone in Somali-Egyptian relations at a time when regional alliances are shifting and Somalia is positioning itself as a neutral but active participant in East African diplomacy.
