Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday attended the official handover ceremony of former Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Adan Madobe), marking the end of his tenure as Speaker of the Federal Parliament following his election as President of South West State.
The ceremony brought together senior government officials and parliamentary leaders to recognize Adan Madobe’s service in the federal legislature and his transition to regional leadership.
Speaking at the event, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commended Adan Madobe for his contribution to Somalia’s parliamentary development and democratic processes, describing his leadership as an “important part of the country’s political journey” .
Following the transition, First Deputy Speaker Saadiya Yasin Haji Samatar formally assumed the role of Acting Speaker of the House of the People. Parliamentary authorities confirmed that preparations will be made for the election of a new Speaker in accordance with constitutional and parliamentary procedures.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also paid tribute to the outgoing Speaker, praising his patience and leadership qualities. He noted that patience remains one of the most valuable attributes of public leadership and said Adan Madobe had demonstrated that quality throughout his tenure.
The Prime Minister further highlighted the significance of Adan Madobe’s recent election as President of South West State, describing him as the first regional state leader in Somalia to assume office through a direct party-based electoral process. He congratulated the newly elected regional president and wished him success in serving the people of South West State and Somalia at large.
The transition marks a new chapter for both the Federal Parliament and South West State, with attention now turning to the upcoming election of a new Speaker of the House of the People.
