President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Applauds Protests as Authentic Reflection of Somali Will Against Ethiopia-Somaliland Accord
Protests erupted in Borama, Hargeysa, and Lughaya as residents denounced the controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The agreement, perceived as unlawful and unenforceable, sparked intense reactions from the Somali community.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia expressed solidarity with those opposing the agreement, welcoming their resistance to Ethiopia’s alleged attempt to claim part of the Somali Sea. He acknowledged reports of individuals in Somaliland areas facing gunfire for rejecting the agreement, praising the courage of those standing against what they perceive as a threat to Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Speaking at a dinner honoring the parliamentary resolution denouncing the disputed agreement, President Mohamud emphasized that” the noise and outcry from Borama, Hargeysa, and Lughaya are reflections of the Somali people’s sentiments.”
He applauded the young activists enduring hardship for the cause, emphasizing their dedication to ensuring no part of Somali land is conceded.
President Mohamud sternly reiterated Somalia’s uncompromising stance on its land, sea, and air, stating that negotiations or compromises on these essential elements are non-negotiable. He emphasized the historical defense of Somali land and affirmed that “no individual or government would be allowed to claim sovereignty over it.”
The dinner, hosted by President Mohamud for members of both Houses of the Federal Parliament, served as an occasion to commend their role in denouncing the controversial Ethiopia-Somaliland port deal. The President acknowledged the pivotal role of the parliamentary resolution in reinforcing Somalia’s commitment to preserving its territorial integrity amidst the ongoing tensions with Ethiopia.
As the noise and protests reverberate across Somali communities, the President said the “nation stands at a critical juncture, emphasizing the collective determination to safeguard its land and maritime boundaries.”
