The Mayor of Banadir Region, Dr. Mungab, has criticized opposition figures who have repeatedly challenged the Federal Government of Somalia and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing them of lacking a clear political programme.
Speaking about the opposition’s recent criticism of government actions, Mungab said their political activities were largely focused on attacking the president and his administration.
“They do not possess any political agenda other than to insult the president and his government,” Mungab said.
His comments came amid a broader political dispute over recent government security and land-enforcement operations in parts of Mogadishu.
Opposition figures have questioned the government’s actions, including a recent air operation involving an F-16 aircraft against suspected Al-Shabaab positions in areas where militant commanders were reportedly believed to be hiding. They suggested that the operation could have been intended to intimidate residents in the Yaqshid and Karaan districts.
The two districts have also recently been affected by government-led eviction operations, in which security agencies removed residents and displaced families from areas described by authorities as public land designated for government purposes.
Mungab rejected suggestions that the administration would alter its position because of criticism from opposition leaders. He said the authorities remained committed to the eviction programme and would not be deterred by political pressure or threats.
The mayor’s remarks underscore the growing political tensions surrounding the Federal Government’s security, land and urban management policies in Mogadishu, with government officials defending the measures while opposition figures continue to raise concerns about their impact on residents.
