In a bid to de-escalate tensions arising from a maritime agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, Kenya’s President William Ruto has stepped in to mediate talks between Somalia and Ethiopia.
President Ruto’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between Somali President Hassan Sheikh and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed come amidst growing friction sparked by the contentious agreement.
However, President Hassan Sheikh has rebuffed President Ruto’s mediation attempts, stating that he will not engage in discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed until Ethiopia revokes the agreement. The Somali president maintains that the agreement poses a threat to Somalia’s territorial integrity.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reiterated that the agreement in question is purely commercial in nature and does not entail any territorial acquisition by Ethiopia.
According to a story by The East African News, diplomatic sources reveal that Kenya has successfully persuaded both Addis Ababa and Mogadishu to exercise restraint in their public statements concerning the dispute. As part of this agreement, it was decided that “both leaders would refrain from making further public remarks on the matter.”
President Ruto’s intervention underscores Kenya’s commitment to regional stability and conflict resolution. By urging restraint and facilitating dialogue, Kenya aims to foster peaceful resolutions to disputes and maintain harmonious relations among neighboring nations.
