Kenya announces Expanded security operations against Al-Shabaab near Somali border

The Kenyan government has announced plans to increase security deployments in areas bordering Somalia following a rise in attacks targeting security officers, with authorities planning to use drones and other surveillance equipment to monitor suspected Al-Shabaab activity.

Kenyan security officials said the expanded operations would involve police officers, military personnel and specialised counterterrorism units operating in areas where the militant group is believed to be active.

The security agencies have reportedly conducted preliminary operations in recent days as part of efforts to counter the threat and prevent further attacks against security personnel.

A Kenyan security official described the measures as necessary to address the growing threat posed by Al-Shabaab, following a roadside bombing targeting a police officer last week.

The operations will reportedly involve a range of equipment, including armoured vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, to monitor movement in forested areas where militants are suspected of operating.

Kenya has previously deployed specialised vehicles and other security resources in border areas as part of its efforts to contain cross-border attacks and strengthen surveillance.

The latest measures come as Kenya prepares for its next general election, scheduled for August 10, 2027. The election is expected to take place amid intense political competition, including tensions involving President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Authorities have presented the expanded security operations as part of efforts to improve security in the border region. Further details on the scale and duration of the deployments have not been provided.
