If Politics is the forgotten child of Mother Nature

Well, if politics is the forgotten child of Mother Nature then the laws of Mother Nature will be obeyed.

According to Charles Darwin, nature survives through the premise of the survival of the fittest. In politics, Machievelli contends power is taken and not given. In such brutal scenario there is no room for complacency. Being fit means many things. It can mean physically and mentally fit. It can mean being strategically astute. It can mean financially prepared. It can mean spiritually fit.

Mother Nature is not kind to victims of blind spots. The blind spot that an incumbent politician may not survive is commonly known as the paralysis of the incumbent. Playing it safe may not win elections. High risk political manoeuvres by the opposing side is often seen as the gateway to pushing the incumbent to succumb to pressure and give way. The incumbent must not assume all is well because he/she has done good things.

Blind spots in general could be:-
1. Things that you do not see at all.
2. Things that you perceive too slowly.
3. Things you see after they happened

These blind spots could be avoided or exacerbated by the incumbent politician by accessing seasoned and knowledgeable experts or isolate the incumbent from those who could help him/her to a successful election. The blind spots could also be avoided by purging the system of those who have become comfortable with the status quo and replace them with fresh blood and ideas. The ‘yes’ men and women will be feeding the incumbent with daily positive news that all is well which may not be entirely true.

At times of elections its often these blind spots that could punish the incumbent politician if they don’t plan well. This is where Mother Nature will punish those affected by the phenomenon of the paralysis of the incumbent. After all, as Machievelli opined that if coming to power was easy staying in power is even more difficult.

A common theme that seems to have been popularised lately is the concept of political projects. You often hear, so and so will succeed because country X is supporting him (its often him not her) financially and politically. A word of caution to this group. Mother Nature hates political projects. You entry and exit will be a disgrace in the history books for years to come. Don’t go there. Mother Nature is about survival of the fittest not the selected.
