Heavy fighting erupts in Galkayo as Puntland and Federal Forces clash

Heavy fighting involving artillery broke out in eastern Galkayo on Wednesday morning as Puntland security forces clashed with troops linked to Somalia’s Federal Government, raising fears of a further escalation in tensions between the two sides.

Residents reported intense exchanges of mortar and artillery fire, with several shells landing in residential neighbourhoods, forcing civilians to flee their homes. Local reports indicated that civilian casualties and displacement had occurred, although no official casualty figures were immediately available.

The clashes come after weeks of heightened political and security tensions following Puntland’s allegations that the Federal Government had deployed additional troops and weapons to Galkayo. Mogadishu has not publicly responded to those accusations.

The latest violence also follows fighting reported a day earlier in southern Galkayo, where federal forces and local militias reportedly clashed over weapons allegedly being transported to the northern part of the city.

On Tuesday night, the Puntland administration issued a statement condemning what it described as interference by the Federal Government in Puntland’s internal affairs.

The renewed fighting has heightened concerns over security in Galkayo, a city divided between Puntland and Galmudug, where political disputes have periodically fuelled armed confrontations.

Authorities have not yet announced whether efforts are underway to broker a ceasefire as residents continue to seek safety amid the ongoing hostilities.
