The European Union has expressed concern over the deteriorating political situation in South West State, urging all parties to pursue dialogue amid rising tensions between regional authorities and the Federal Government of Somalia.
Francesca Di Mauro, the European Union’s representative in Somalia, stated that the bloc is closely monitoring developments in the region, where a deepening standoff has raised fears of instability.
“The European Union is following the escalating situation in Southwest State with concern. Constructive dialogue is critical at this point; all mediation efforts are welcome and should be given a chance,” she said.
Her remarks come at a time when political disagreements over leadership, electoral processes, and governance have intensified, particularly in key areas such as Baidoa.
The EU’s call aligns with ongoing mediation efforts led by traditional elders and national leaders, aimed at preventing further escalation. Observers warn that failure to de-escalate tensions could undermine fragile gains in security and governance, especially as the country continues to confront threats from armed groups and recurring humanitarian challenges.
