The ONLF has broken its silence on the situation unfolding in the Somali regional government, shedding light on reported incidents of alleged misconduct by Federal Police forces. According to ONLF, the people of the region have been facing repeated challenges, including theft of goods and animals by Federal Police Forces of Ethiopia in recent days.
In a press release issued by ONLF, the organization “unequivocally condemns the reported theft and violation of property belonging to the people of the Somali region by Federal Police forces.” The press release highlights instances where Federal Police forces are accused of robbing livestock and other goods from the residents of Jigjiga, the capital town of the Somali regional government.
Moreover, ONLF alleges that Federal Police forces have resorted to using live ammunition against vehicles belonging to civilians in the Somali region. Such actions, warns ONLF, have the potential to “escalate tensions and jeopardize the peace and stability of the region if left unchecked.”
The press release further calls upon the Ethiopian government to “immediately halt the reported instances of theft and property violations perpetrated against the people of the Somali region.” Additionally, ONLF urges the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that the rights of the people of the Somali region are respected and safeguarded.
Furthermore, ONLF appeals to the international community to lend its support to their cause, urging the Ethiopian government to address the issues plaguing the Somali region and protect the rights of its inhabitants.
This press release comes amid mounting grievances from the people of the Somali region, particularly livestock traders who allege confiscation of their animals by Federal Forces. Federal authorities claim that these animals, sourced from neighboring towns and countries, are illegal.
