Egypt Intensifies Efforts to Join New African Union Mission in Somalia

Egypt has ramped up its diplomatic efforts to join the upcoming African Union Somalia Support Mission (AUSSOM), which is set to begin early next year.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty recently traveled to Uganda, where he met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to discuss regional cooperation and Egypt’s potential role in the mission aimed at stabilizing Somalia.

During their discussions, President Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to supporting the new mission, expressing his country’s readiness to continue contributing troops. He also emphasized Somalia’s sovereign right to determine the mission’s structure and select participating countries, underscoring the importance of respecting Somalia’s autonomy.

President Museveni praised Egypt’s ongoing contributions to peacekeeping efforts across Africa, noting that closer cooperation with Uganda could strengthen peace initiatives in Somalia. He highlighted the mission as a critical opportunity to reinforce stability across the region.

Minister Abdelatty, following his discussions, stated that both Uganda and Egypt are committed to supporting AUSSOM and Somalia’s long-term security. He expressed confidence that a partnership between the two nations would bolster peace and development efforts in Somalia.

Set to launch in early 2025, the AUSSOM mission is expected to include a coalition of African nations dedicated to fostering lasting peace and supporting Somalia’s rebuilding process.
