Defence Minister reaffirms Somalia’s commitment to defeating IED threats

Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by terrorist groups.

Speaking at the National C-IED Strategy Validation Conference in Mogadishu, Minister Fiqi said success would depend on unity among Somali security agencies and continued support from international partners.

He praised the Central Monitoring Department of the Office of National Security for leading the strategy’s preparation, calling it “a vital step to safeguard Somali lives and enhance national stability.”

Officials at the event highlighted that the C-IED strategy would be a milestone in Somalia’s broader security sector reform, linking counter-IED efforts with wider stabilization initiatives.
They stressed that success would hinge on sustained coordination between government institutions and community-level actors.

Minister Fiqi reaffirmed the “MoD’s commitment to strengthening the capabilities of the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) to confront the threat posed by IEDs deployed by terrorist groups.”
