Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Fisheries Management & Development Council (FMDC) is currently hosting its inaugural meeting in Mogadishu, bringing together Federal and Federal Member State (FMS) Ministers to address critical issues in the fisheries sector. This historic gathering seeks to chart a course for sustainable Fisheries Management and Development in Somalia.
One of the primary goals of the meeting is to formulate directives aimed at safeguarding Somalia’s fisheries and marine resources while harnessing the potential of its blue economy.
On a recent Sunday, productive discussions transpired between the Minister of the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Blue Economy in Somalia and the Ambassador of Norway in Somalia. The talks emphasized collaboration, promoting cooperation, and advancing sustainable development within the fishery sector, marking a significant step towards a thriving and sustainable industry.
Somalia boasts an abundance of marine life, making the fisheries sector a goldmine of opportunities.
The newly enacted Fisheries Law of 2023, Article 11, established the Fisheries Management and Development Council with the authority to make decisions concerning the management and development of the fisheries sector. Additionally, the Ministry of Fisheries has issued stern warnings against illegal fishing activities.
As the FMDC convenes in Mogadishu, the Minstry of Fisheries said that Somali government is committed to nurturing and protecting its fisheries sector, thereby paving the way for a more prosperous and sustainable future for all stakeholders involved.
