The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has successfully handed over several Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) to the Somali National Armed Forces (SNA), a significant achievement in the mission’s mandate to transfer security responsibilities back to Somalia. The transition of these bases, ATMIS said, reflects Somalia’s progress in strengthening its own security infrastructure and highlights the growing capacity of the SNA to lead in the fight against insurgent groups.
ATMIS stated that the handover demonstrates Somalia’s advancement toward self-reliance and stability, a goal established in collaboration with international partners to bolster security across the nation. The turnover is part of a phased strategy to gradually transfer full control to the Somali government, empowering local forces to take a more central role in peace and security efforts.
This milestone comes as Somalia continues to develop its security and military capabilities. The bases, which have served as strategic operational points for ATMIS, are expected to support SNA operations more effectively against militant threats in the region.
ATMIS officials have praised the development, reaffirming their commitment to a responsible and sustainable transition that secures both the sovereignty and stability of Somalia.
