The re-election of Ali Gudlawe Hussein as president of Hirshabelle State has raised questions about the administration’s future, particularly how he intends to address the ongoing political dispute and public opposition in Hiiraan region.
In a 19-minute speech, Ali Gudlawe avoided addressing the dispute in Hiiraan, raising questions about his plans to resolve the long-standing tensions during his second term in office.
Hirshabelle, which comprises Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, has been vulnerable to political divisions, with Gudlawe expected to reconsider his approach to leadership following his first term.
Some politicians and members of the public in Hiiraan have opposed the existence of the Hirshabelle administration, calling for their grievances to be addressed and a lasting solution to the dispute.
Somalia’s Interior Minister, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, told the media in Jowhar on Sunday that efforts were underway to resolve the dispute between Hiiraan region and the Hirshabelle administration.
Gudlawe was first elected to lead Hirshabelle six years ago. His re-election has renewed attention on how he will address existing grievances in Hiiraan and respond to opposition to the state administration in the region.
His second term is expected to test his ability to bridge political divisions, address local concerns and strengthen unity between the two regions that make up Hirshabelle.
