The Federal Government of Somalia has formally announced that Ahlu Sunna Waljamaaca has been removed from the United Nations list of parties involved in child abuse during periods of armed conflict.
In a statement welcomed by the Ministry of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia , the ministry referenced the United Nations annual report, which confirms that Ahlu Sunna is no longer included among the armed groups operating in the country.
The ministry said the decision followed investigations and in-depth assessments that found Ahlu Sunna had stopped all activities related to the recruitment or use of children.
It further stated that members of the group have formally integrated into Somalia’s national security institutions where they are now part of the official forces of the Somali government.
“Members of that organization have officially been absorbed into Somalia’s national security institutions, and they are now part of the government’s official forces an outcome that removes the basis for recognizing it as an independent armed group,” the statement said.
According to the statement, this change eliminates the basis for classifying Ahlu Sunna as an independent armed group
