Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to travel to New York in the coming hours to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
A preparatory delegation accompanying the President’s visit is already in New York and has been making arrangements for his arrival and accommodation, the sources said.
Hassan Sheikh is expected to undertake a journey of more than 10 hours before arriving in New York, where he is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with leaders and senior officials attending the 81st UN General Assembly.
The Somali President is expected to participate in discussions and meetings during the General Assembly and deliver an address outlining developments and challenges facing Somalia.
His speech is expected to cover key issues including security, politics and the humanitarian situation in Somalia, as well as the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The President is also expected to discuss the support Somalia requires from international partners as the country continues efforts to strengthen its national institutions and assume greater responsibility for security.
Hassan Sheikh’s participation comes as Somalia seeks continued international support for its security, humanitarian and development priorities, while engaging with world leaders and international organisations on the country’s ongoing transition.
