Uganda’s Chief General of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called for the AUSSOM mission force to remain in Somalia, citing concerns over financial shortfalls.
Speaking during a special meeting in Kampala with military commanders from countries participating in the new AUSSOM operation, General Muhoozi said that maintaining security in Somalia requires decisive action by African partner states.
He added that this is necessary to overcome the reduction in support from the international community.
The general warned that the ongoing lack of funding could affect the Somalia peacekeeping effort that has been operating since 2007.
The remarks come after the United Nations Office for Support to Somalia stopped financial support for the AUSSOM mission. That support is set to expire on December 31, 2026.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the heads of the countries contributing troops in Somalia are expected to hold a special meeting in Kampala, where decisions will be made regarding the future of the AUSSOM mission.
