Somalia and Türkiye have held discussions on expanding cooperation in fisheries, port infrastructure and marine investment as a Turkish delegation visited the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport in Mogadishu.
The delegation, led by the Director General responsible for fisheries in Türkiye’s Ministry of Agriculture, included representatives and executives from major companies operating in the seafood and fishing sector.
The talks focused on “investment opportunities in Somalia’s fisheries industry, the condition of existing ports, the movement of fishing vessels and plans for developing new fishing ports in the country”.
Abdirahim Warsame Diriye, Deputy Chairman of the Somali Marine Resources Research Centre, said the two sides agreed to maintain cooperation and accelerate technical work related to the fisheries sector.
The Turkish delegation also visited the Mogadishu Port Authority to assess infrastructure that is expected to support a fisheries project previously agreed between Somalia and Türkiye.
Deputy Port Manager Dr. Ali Haji Mohamed said discussions at the port focused on preparations for receiving Turkish and Somali fishing companies expected to operate in Somalia’s fisheries sector. The delegation toured sections of the port to assess existing infrastructure, with officials saying the assessment had been completed.
The discussions come as Somalia seeks to attract investment into its largely untapped blue economy and develop its fisheries sector. Officials said continued cooperation with Türkiye could help strengthen fisheries infrastructure, support investment and create opportunities across the country’s marine resources value chain.
