The Federal Republic of Somalia has formally declared its candidacy for a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) for the 2025–2028 term, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
Somalia said its candidacy underscores its commitment to contributing to continental peace, security, and stability efforts. The AU PSC, a critical organ of the African Union, is responsible for maintaining peace and security across Africa, providing Somalia an opportunity to play a central role in shaping policies that address conflicts and promote stability on the continent.
“We are honored to announce Somalia’s candidacy for the African Union Peace and Security Council,” the Ministry’s statement read. “Somalia is ready to bring its experience and commitment to addressing security challenges and fostering peace and development in Africa.”
This announcement comes as Somalia continues its significant strides toward stability and regional cooperation, having recently joined the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2025–2026 term. Somalia’s government sees these positions as pivotal in amplifying its voice and priorities on regional and global platforms.
Somalia’s bid for the AU PSC reflects its dedication to working collaboratively with other African nations to address pressing issues, including terrorism, conflict resolution, and climate-related security risks.
The election for the AU PSC will take place later this year during an African Union summit, with Somalia competing for one of the seats allocated to the East African region. If successful, Somalia will further strengthen its role as a key player in promoting peace and security across the continent.
