Miraa traders in Kenya have demanded the Nairobi government to restore diplomatic relations with Somalia to secure the over 16 million shillings Kenya Miraa market used to record on daily basis from trading the commodity before the ban was imposed.
They also called on the government to refrain from taking steps that would jeopardize relations between the two countries that which is already bad.
Nyambene Merchants Association Chairman Miraa Kimathi Munjuri said the flight ban is one that is poorly advised and Kenya needs to work to restore trade between the two countries.
The ban is not required because it is increasing the misunderstanding between the two countries and Kenya is losing its business” Mr Munjuri said.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) through a notice to the airlines has banned all flights to and from Mogadishu without specifying any reasons on 11th May 2021.
“All flights between Kenya and Somalia have been stopped except for UN humanitarian flights and medical ” the regulator said
Last Sunday, 12 tonnes of Miira worth 5 million Shillings were returned from Nairobi’s Wilson airport after the Federal government of Somalia announced that Miraa from Kenya remains prohibited.
