Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), in coordination with international partners, carried out a planned counterterrorism operation on Sunday night targeting Al-Shabaab militants in central Somalia.
According to an official statement from NISA, the operation was conducted near Gayacad Junction, close to the Mabaax area in the Hiran region. The agency confirmed that 15 members of the Al-Shabaab militant group were killed in the raid, while several others were injured.
Additionally, NISA reported conducting “airstrikes on militant positions in Aadan Yabaal town and Ceel Cali Axmed village, located in the Middle Shabelle region.” These sites were reportedly being used by Al-Shabaab to “coordinate and stage attacks.”
The agency described the operations as part of ongoing efforts to “degrade the capabilities” of the group and prevent planned attacks against civilians and government targets.
The Somali government, with support from regional and international allies, has intensified its military campaign against Al-Shabaab, targeting its operational hubs across several regions.
