13 Years Later: Ground Blockade Lifted in Xudur, Waajid, Diinsoor, and Qansaxdheere

Several districts in Somalia’s Bay and Bakool regions have reportedly seen the end of a ground blockade that had been in place for over 13 years, originally imposed by the Al-Shabaab militant group. The breakthrough comes after sustained efforts by local communities, particularly traders and businesspeople, who have long advocated for the lifting of the restrictions.

The affected towns — Xudur, Waajid, Diinsoor, and Qansaxdheere — are all located within the South West State of Somalia. Since Al-Shabaab imposed the blockade more than a decade ago, the districts have suffered severe restrictions on movement and trade, contributing to economic decline and humanitarian challenges.

Videos circulating on social media show jubilant scenes from Qansaxdheere, where residents were seen celebrating the lifting of the blockade. One resident, speaking on a widely shared video, expressed his joy:
“Qansaxdheere has been under siege for a long time. Praise be to God who has lifted the blockade that burdened us for more than 13 years.”

Despite the significance of the development, neither the Federal Government of Somalia nor the South West State authorities have officially commented on the situation or confirmed the complete restoration of access to the towns.

Al-Shabaab, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the international bodies, has frequently used blockades as a strategy to control and punish communities, making travel and commercial activity extremely difficult.

The removal of these ground restrictions is seen as a hopeful sign of progress and a potential turning point for communities long cut off from the rest of the country.
